Self-Assessment

Final Draft

Throughout my education, I wrote essays on different topics, mostly in high school. However, most of the essays were just normal essays that mainly concentrated on a topic of personal experience or a topic in which I was interested. But in this essay, I will talk about my experiences and things I learned in English 110 during the first semester.

At the start of the semester, I was not sure about the class that I took, but I was sure that I would enjoy it and learn from it. We started our semester in this class with a short lesson on language and the problems people face in our society, which mostly concentrated on groups of people who are immigrants. We read stories about immigrants and the experiences they learned and faced. And I also watched videos that talk about the problem from sources like Ted Talk. Soon after, we started to talk about the “language literacy narrative” that we would be writing about and our personal experiences with languages. As we wrote our stories about the problems we faced in the language, we realized that our experiences were similar in some ways and different in others. And often, we talk mostly about the experience we get from coming to this foreign country. We talked about different kinds of problems, like how people try to scam us because we are foreigners and also try to take advantage of us. Personal experience was easy to talk about, but trying to connect with the audience and also bring up political problems was challenging. After that work was done, we started working on “spoken literacy questions.”. This was also challenging, mostly the part where I had to talk about the experiences that I had and learned through them. I usually avoid presentations, and as a result, this assessment was extremely hard and challenging. After that, we did a peer review on the Written literacy language and turned it in. As with that, we finish our first phase of the semester.

The second phase of the class was a slow start, which personally made me lazy but was trying to be on time with work. Our first work was learning about website editing where we will put all of our work in there and arrange it adequately. The website helps to have organized work

And it also gives us a platform to present our work and what we learn from it. Soon after, we started working on our second big project, which was profile writing. This was a big challenge for me because I know how to write my own story, but writing about someone else and their life is a lot of work. In our first work, we did interviews with our partner. We asked questions to each other and had notes on it so that we could write about it. My partner and I talked about a lot of experiences we had through languages and cultures that affected us in different ways. Then we went into the next phase, which was writing a fully constructed story using my partner’s interview. I struggled a lot, especially in this work, because I never contrast an essay that is about someone else’s life story. But eventually, I wrote a story using the information that I got from my partner. I tried my best to write as much as possible and connect to their lives and how it affects them. Some of their experiences change who they are. Eventually, this was the last work we did before the end of the second phase of the work.
